YOUTH WORSHIP AND GATHERING: 6th – 12th grades, Sundays, 9:30am – 10:45am (Rooms 102, 103)
Each Sunday the youth gather in a sacred circle where they explore some of the scripture such as the Beatitudes from Matthew 5, the parables of Jesus, and other stories of the Old and New Testaments. They may explore through discussion, art and music. Often there is singing. Always there is sharing of concerns and prayers. Fellowship time follows in the hangout room (103) with couches, foosball, air hockey and donuts.
The youth take a week long trip every summer somewhere in the United States. Previously, the youth participated on two missions to the Appalachian South Folklife Center in West Virginia, in a Civil Rights Tour of the south, and before that they had a mission week in Mobile, AL. In other years they’ve traveled to different parts of the U.S. participating in the mission experiences of DOOR, the Mennonite Mission Network.
This year (June 18-22, 2017) the middle school youth will spend a week in South Georgia distributing clothing donations and hygiene kits. We do this work in partnership with Emory School of Medicine. This trip is open to anyone 6-12th grade who has parental consent. Central UCC youth have been involved in this project since 1999. Please email Rev. Lacey, [email protected], if you’d like more information.
The youth attended the Winter Youth Retreat in Blowing Rock, North Carolina along with other UCC churches from both the south east conference and the southern conference. We collected and packed over 100 boxes of donated clothing along with 500 hygiene kits for our Middle School trip to South Georgia with the Emory Physicians program (South Georgia Farmworkers Health Project).
The youth are always excited about service days through out the year at Atlanta Community Food Bank, Open Hand, the Open Door Community, and many more. We also spend time making hygiene kits for the migrant farm workers in South Georgia in preparation for our annual mission trip in June. At least twice throughout the year, service projects will be combined with an overnight lock-in at the church where a good game of sardines is just about guaranteed.
Central UCC offers the Our Whole Lives Program which is a series of sexuality education programs for six age groups. For children, we offer classes for K-1st and for grades 4th to 6th graders. For youth, we offer the 7th-9th grade level. Our Whole Lives, together with Sexuality and Our Faith, equips participants with accurate, age-appropriate information in six subject areas: human development, relationships, personal skills, sexual behavior, sexual health, and society and culture. It provides not only facts about anatomy and human development, but helps participants to clarify their values, build interpersonal skills and understand the social, emotional and spiritual aspects of sexuality. The activities are age appropriate, loaded with information, interactive, relevant and often fun. We presently teach these courses in alternate years. Learn more about Our Whole Lives
Youth Confirmation for grades 7-9 is happens every other year. We explore subjects such as history and polity of the UCC, creation, justice, the work and mission of the local church, the history of the Bible, resurrection, and spiritual practices. Along with learning and exploring our faith we also spend time praying for one another and playing games. Confirmation Class is a time to explore what it means to be Christian, to be a church member and to affirm one’s baptism. At the end of the class, in a celebration on Confirmation Sunday, the youth are invited to join the church.
