Voices and visions of hope from beyond the grave

Italian archaeologists have been excavating a cemetery on a hill overlooking Pakistan’s Swat valley.  Malala Yousafzai, the 15-year who was shot by the Taliban in October (you can read my earlier blog post about her at WhereHeartandMindMeet), is from the Swat valley; the Taliban have a strong presence there and are often violent.

While the exact age of the cemetery has yet to be determined, the archaeologists believe it to be from the Dardic community of 3,000 years ago.  They have found 32 sealed tombs.  In them, “the archaeologists discovered hairpins and spindles, beautifully preserved pots, ornaments made of copper and bronze, and some pieces of iron…what they didn’t find in any of the graves was a weapon…the contents seem to be carefully chosen to show the ancient community’s values…a positive proof of what this culture wanted to show, even to themselves, this was the most important thing for them.”

I agree with Jürgen Moltmann that hope is not an “opium of the beyond,” but sometimes a holy incense wafts in from the grave that can call us back to the reality of the present with renewed vigor to be “alive in this world.”  Sometimes the dead do lead us in hope and remind us what is important.
