One of the ways that I cultivate hope in my life (as opposed to simple wishing) is by watching for its incarnation all around.  The NPR story about an Afghan woman’s soccer team caught my ear last week (Morning Edition, 28 Nov 2012).

Established five years ago, these Afghan women have faced significant obstacles to play ball.  “Some pretended to be boys when they were kids so that they could play…others just kind of got together secretly. There are so many stories. Each person has their individual story. What they do have in common is that they do have a love for the game.”

Their hearts are filled with hope, such that they are willing to take such risks; their eyes are filled with hope, such that they can see beyond the current struggle to a transformed society.  And they incarnate, they embody, their hope.

Advent is a season for journeys toward an incarnational hope; in the famous exhortation of Gandhi, we must be the change we long to see.
