Advent Candles for World AIDS Day

We begin our Advent journey by passing through World AIDS Day. The candle of Hope guides our way through both.

This year the calendaring of Advent is quite curious:  Nov 1 was a Friday, which brought Thanksgiving (fourth Thursday of November) as early as it can arrive (Nov 22) and that pulls all the Sundays of Advent into December (the four Sundays prior to Christmas); an early Thanksgiving celebration creates a later start to Advent. Tomorrow, the annual journey around the  Advent wreath begins; we will rekindle the candle of Hope.

Today, Saturday, December 1, is World AIDS Day.  Many of us have donned red ribbons for several decades–we have been to multiple candlelight vigils in remembrance of those who have died and cast our flickering lights of hope against the shadows of the virus and its prejudices.  World AIDS Day always falls within Advent; this year it stands as the liminal portal between Thanksgiving and our sojourn to the crèche.

So, as the calendar will have it this year, today many of us light candles to honor those taken by HIV/AIDS, tomorrow we rekindle the candle of Hope, and on Christmas Eve, during the evening services shrouded in the darkness, we light our crèche candles.  As ever, but perhaps more visible this year, Advent is a journey through the darkness with tiny, flickering, tender flames.

So, a question for reflection as we begin the journey:  Perhaps it is a tender flicker or maybe a bright flame, what candle of hope are you rekindling and carrying through Advent this year?
